First Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, CA

A happy accident today revealed this interior of First M.E. in Los Angeles. I’ve had exteriors of this church for some time and assumed a grand A-A interior but this exceeded even my expectations. At this scale, these buildings can be downright voluptuous with the sweeping curves of balcony rails, especially when the movable partition is out of sight. Architects were Austin & Skilling, presumably of Los Angeles.

I’m told it was demolished in 1922. Since the cornerstone was laid in August 1899, that’s a pretty long lifespan for LA.
