Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, Baltimore, MD

November 15, 2013

Built in 1884 from a design by McKim Mead & White, First Methodist Episcopal church was the “mother church” of Methodism in the U.S. It is a variation of the Akron-Auditorium in which the sanctuary/auditorium and the Sunday School are separate; unconnected by the ubiquitous two-story movable partition. From an architectural historical standpoint, what is now Lovely Lane United Methodist church is simultaneously: 1) the most prominent by architectural pedigree and 2) the least typical A-A variant. How’s that for a qualified endorsement?
