First Baptist Church, Waco, TX

Lane & Scott, architects of Waco, Texas, designed First Baptist in 1908, a remarkable blend of Neo-Classicism with Gothic windows. But who wants to quibble over mixed metaphors.

Those of us who drove the road from Oklahoma City (Norman, really) and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex rarely got any father. Going farther to Austin or San Antonio, Waco was little more than a rest stop, if you know what I mean. I’m sorry now for having paused there only to relieve and replenish myself, because this would have been a jaw-dropping experience. Nearby Baylor University’s chapel had grown too small for commencement exercises, so First Baptist generously offered its sanctuary for the event. Witness this extraordinary interior view.

The back end or bustle of the interior must have been the location of its original Sunday School.
