First Methodist Church, Arkansas City, KS

December 31, 2013

Arkansas City was a stop on the “Texas Chief” train of the Santa Fe. I used to ride that from Chicago to Norman, Oklahoma when I was an undergraduate. It was timed perfectly to leave Chicago’s Dearborn Station at about 6:00 p.m. and pull into Norman about 9:00 the next morning. This was of course long before the debasement of rail travel and the creation of Amtrak. Sorry to say, I never disembarked at Arkansas City and ran the risk of finding the former First Methodist Church, which may even have been gone in the 1960s.

What can one say about this mongrel of metaphors except “Yikes!”
