Christian Church, Fairfield, NE

June 10, 2014

Number three in today’s postings is also a Disciples of Christ church, this time in Fairfield, Nebraska. Neo-classicism is always dangerous, especially when it gets in the hands of the inexperienced. Just ask Mies van der Rohe about the multiple knock-offs that bear his badly understood influence. The portico of Fairfield’s church isn’t quite convincing, particularly with those columns on their pedestals intended to mimic the building’s raised basement. Books such as William Rotch Ware’s The American Vignola were widely available, so there is little excuse for such club-footed handling of standard classical elements.

Do I sound the elitist here?
