First Baptist Church, Ottawa, KS

July 9, 2014

First Baptist in Ottawa still stands at the corner of Hickory and East Fourth streets. Perhaps not as exuberant at Richardson himself might have done, it profited much from Richardson’s reformatory restraint. Had HHR lived longer than forty-eight years—amazing, isn’t it, what he accomplished in such a short professional life—Richardson was himself moving toward such a stripped-down aesthetic. The architect was Ottawa practitioner George P. Washburn (1846-1922), known for the thirteen county courthouses he designed, in addition to work such as this church.

The postcard view is good but much too tidy; this other image gives a better sense of its original context.
