Baptist Church, Oakes, ND

When the scales of architectural propriety fall from your eyes, buildings like this Baptist church in Oakes, North Dakota can become endearing in their stylistic robustitudinousness. I, for one, can’t stop smiling when I look at it.

Of the five alternating elements of the building itself, I think the three on the right constitute its sanctuary, while the two on the left form the Sunday School. Each has its own discrete entrance. [Did I say “discrete”?] I’ve been to Oakes in search of this building and find it as energetic in person, though a little less startling within the context of houses, a school across the street, and lots more trees and shrubbery. If memory serves (which it often doesn’t), the construction date is around 1909.
