Washington Street Congregational Church (UCC), Toledo, OH

July 20, 2014

Demolished to clear a path for Toledo’s Interstate highway system, Washington Street Congregational stood at the acute angle of a street intersection. It’s difficult from this (and the handful of other photos that exist) to tell just how logical the plan of this building had been. It squeezed both a semi-circular auditorium and a linked semi-circular Sunday School on the triangular lot, leaving very little space for anything but approach walks. Though small and eccentric by most standards, this building holds a special place in the development of the A-A church, because the superintendent of its Sunday School was Marion Lawrance, author of  Housing the Sunday School: Or, A Practical Study of Sunday School Buildings published in 1911 and influential for many years. One wonders what role Lawrance might have played in negotiating the facility here.
