Methodist Episcopal Church, Santa Clara, CA

September 11, 2014

At the turn of the twentieth century, Midwesterners gravitated to the sunnier climes of southern California, with astounding architectural consequences. The Pasadena home of David and Mary Gamble by architects Greene & Greene may be among the most notable examples. But many midwestern institutions came with those domestic pioneers, including their Protestant religiosity. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to find significant numbers of Methodist and other mainline denominations electing to construct Akron-Auditorium buildings. I suspect the M.E. church in Santa Clara is a classic case in point. The date and status of this building aren’t yet known.
