Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, West Philadelphia, PA

September 25, 2014

resolver

Calvary UMC has stood at the corner of 48th Street and Baltimore since 1905. Identified as the work of “Brown, Gillespie & Carrell,” I suspect a minor error: Gillespie & Carroll were a New York City architectural firm, involved with the Baptist church in Worcester posted earlier, and the Brown is probably W. R. Brown of the Cincinnati firm of Brown, Burton & Davis, well known for their promotion of the Akron Sunday School and the A-A plan in general. Happily, this church seems to be thriving as the merger of several congregations and a cultural anchor for the surrounding community. Their website includes plans confirming my suspicion of an A-A configuration—an F-1, with no direct connection between Sunday School and sanctuary—though there certainly could be.

If only this sort of information was available for every church we’re looking at.
