Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, New York, NY

October 2, 2014

Calvary salem

At the time of its construction in 1887, Calvary M. E. church had the largest auditorium of any Protestant church in New Y0rk City. Architect John Rochester Thomas was much better known in his own time than he is remembered today. The church was enlarged in 1890. Salem UMC bought this building in 1923 and has worshipped there since.

Whether there is a genuine Akron Sunday School in there is still unverified. But the book-matched façades on Seventh Avenue and 129th Street are evidence of a diagonal bowl-shaped auditorium.

The tower roof alteration does make a difference.

UPDATE [17DEC2017]: A much better image.
