State Street Methodist Church, Trenton, NJ

October 22, 2014

State Street Methodist Episcopal Church represents both an addition to the database and, more significantly, a whole new source for information about Akron-Auditorium churches. Perhaps it also opens a new line of inquiry into their fate.

This New Jersey church was destroyed by fire on 16 December 1956. As far as I can tell, no postcard view of it has appeared on eBay (my primary source) and even google has come up dry with either images or meaningful information. This view comes from a newspaper photo morgue, all of which are now fair game for the marketplace since the shift to digital photography. Though the image is blurred, it shows the sanctuary and adjacent Sunday School in what appears to be a D-1 formation in the hours following the fire. It was apparently sent out as a UP photo on the wire service. I’ve looked elsewhere for newspaper images and found several—all of them the result of fires and most of those fires from the 1950s.

I can now imagine a chapter on codes and regs.
