Walnut Street Baptist Church, Waterloo, IA

February 9, 2015

Walnut Street Baptist Church was built at Waterloo in 1908 from the plans of local architect Clinton Schockley. Even this long Walnut Street elevation only suggests the complexity and inter-connectedness of the interior spaces, which can be perceived much better from the air. It nearly fills the isosceles triangular site bounded by Walnut, Lime Street and a public alley.

The original congregational relocated to the suburbs and sold the building to another Baptist group who occupy it today. The prow-like shape reminds me of the Duluth Public Library by Gunnar Birkerts.
