Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Salem, IL

February 25, 2015

Salem, Illinois has two Methodist congregations: Grace at 116 East Schwarz (downtown) and a suburban church named Trinity. Happily, Grace (still standing and serving its congregation) has been in the database from the outset, though I’ve been able to find very little information about it. If memory serves—which it sometimes doesn’t—the designer was G. W. Kramer, a New York architect involved with the conception of the Akron Plan for Sunday Schools. What struck me about the Salem church, and still does make me smile, is that eccentric “off ramp” stained glass window: it’s just more fun that stained glass is supposed to have.
