At first glance, I thought the apse end of this church in Belvidere, Illinois (near Rockford along I-90) was the two-level porch of a 19th century lakeside resort hotel. Alas, it’s only an outburst of “Carpenter Gothic” enthusiasm. The 1909 postmark brackets the date of construction at its upper end. It has undoubtedly been replaced.
