First Baptist Church, Oakland, CA

May 25, 2015

This image of a severely damaged First Baptist in Oakland—rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake—hinted at an A-A interior. Such was not the case, however. Sure, I’m disappointed, but it did reveal one hell of an octagonal interior, a 1906 post-earthquake renovation by Julia Morgan, no less!

A little more sleuthing provided interesting speculation about First Baptist’s inspiration but also the confirmation that it probably hadn’t been a true A-A.

Much of this comes from the congregation’s memorial website. They’ve merged with another group and sold the building to others.
