Memorial Baptist Church, Mechanicville, NY

August 17, 2015

On the west bank of the Hudson, about twenty-five miles beyond Albany, lies the small town of Mechanicville. Among its church is this one—identified in several early postcards as Memorial Baptist Church—but difficult to trace under its original name. Admitting that postcard manufacturers sometimes transposed building names, I looked for its characteristic form on google.maps and located when is identified there as Emmanuel United Church. “United” in my experience is often an indicator of either UCC (United Church of Christ or Congregational) affiliation or a UMC (United Methodist Church). Here the uniting may be a union of multiple compatible denominations for economic reasons.

Suffice to say it’s a handsome building with a likely Akron Plan Sunday School. See it semicircular clerestory on the left of the bottom photograph? That roof form is what helped me locate it on google.maps.
