Methodist Episcopal Church, Galena, KS

At 520 Joplin Street you will find the United Methodist Church of Galena, Kansas, confirmed by google.maps. I hope that an email to the congregation will at least provide a date of construction and confirmation that an Akron-Auditorium plan once existed in its Romanesque Revival shell.


You can see the liberties that postcard publishers often took with rendition: the contrasting color of the arches in the PC act somewhat like eyebrows for the window and door openings, providing some definition that the actual buildings lacks. But I wonder why the entrances were altered.

UPDATE [07Feb2018]: Dorcia Johnson, pastor of the UMC church in Galena, was written to say that, despite the similarities between the postcard image and the church there today, it’s a different building, which certainly suggests a regional practitioner building multiple churches from the same or only slightly modified plans.

Consider, if you will, the UMC facility in Burr Oak, Kansas, which is more than three hundred miles from Galena:
