After so much speculation about churches that might be Akron-Auditorium, it’s good to refresh our memories with an iconic example like Portland’s First Baptist Church.

Designed by one of the major innovators in the A-A phenomenon—Warren Howard Hayes of Minneapolis—First Baptist is one of several Hayes churches that were published very close to the time of their construction. No doubt this led to other commissions, but, tragically, he died in 1899 at the tender professional age of fifty-two. Hayes churches can be found in New York State (where he practiced before the move to Minnesota), in several Midwestern states, and in the West, making him among the more widely distributed A-A designers.

This illustration comes from The Improvement Bulletin, a Twin Cities building journal, of 11 February 1899. His obituary was published there seven months later.

When the A-A story is ultimately told, Hayes will deserve a chapter of his own.
