First Presbyterian Church, Kansas, IL

November 16, 2015

In one academic study of the work of architect Louis Sullivan, the author praises Sullivan’s design for a Russian Orthodox cathedral (of fairly modest proportions) while condemning his design for St Paul’s Methodist congregation in Cedar Rapids, saying that the Iowa church looked like a high school. While I consider that author’s commentary to be jaundiced—it obviously suggests that there is a “way” for churches to present themselves—that building does, indeed, appear to be secular. Something similar might be said about First Presbyterian church in Kansas, IL, though you won’t hear it from me.

Whether this is an A-A building remains to be shown. I present it here simply because it’s an interesting variation on the small town Midwestern church building.
