Methodist Episcopal Church, Perry, IA

December 18, 2015

Perry has a new Methodist church, which appears to be on the site of this Neo-Classical from early in the century. I post it here to make a point about symmetry: what seems to be a symmetrical design (despite the Sunday School appendage on the right) is often asymmetrical on the interior.

Implied symmetry is suggested by the prominent ionic-columned portico centered in a simple brick mass and the dome, which is probably on axis with not only the entry, but also the pedimented window grouping in the left side. Yet the interior view below shows a corner pulpit with what I’m guessing is the organ on axis with the front entry. It’s too bad that the right hand side of the image is cropped, because there appears to be a framed opening that would naturally link the sanctuary with which might logically be an Akron sunday School.
