First Christian Church, Athens, OH

January 7, 2016

An enlarged First Christian Church (DoC) was proposed in 1913 (when, in typical anonymity, “[A]n architect was hired and grandiose plans were presented, including Sunday school rooms to accommodate 1,800 pupils and a gymnasium”). Those plans were scaled back and the completed building was dedicated at 24 West State Street in 1917. The National Register nomination will probably settle the architect’s identity. That nomination acknowledges it as a “prime example of the Akron Plan.”

UPDATE (2016.11.09): Postcard coloration often differs considerably:

UPDATE (2017.04.15): This building, designed by architect George W. Kramer, is being renovated as the history center for the Athens County Historical Society and Museum.
