Methodist Episcopal Church, Aberdeen, SD

January 22, 2016

Aberdeen’s Methodist Episcopal church was posted last October in “a gaggle of A-A designs.” But this fantastic real photo card showed up today and told me Aberdeen needed its own post.

Brown & Davis (and related firms Crapsey & Brown and Brown Burton & Davis) were among the most prolific designers of A-A churches. The polygonal chancel and prominent lantern/cupola were standard elements in their designs, while the range of style ran from Richardsonian and modified Gothic Revival to the Spanish Colonia seen here. It’s sad to revisit many of these buildings and find how many lanterns have been removed, victims of storm and leakage.
