First Christian Church, Atlanta, GA

When George Washington Kramer died at his East Orange, New Jersey home in 1938, he was ninety-one years old and had been retired from active practice for many years. Kramer’s obituary makes that practice seem almost impossible, since it claims more than 2,200 churches to his credit. I’m aware of only a handful, however, like First Christian in Atlanta, for a downtown congregation that has long since been replaced by high rise office buildings and parking lots.

Newspaper coverage for First Christian describes in great detail the wonders of its design, especially the Akron Plan Sunday School and its ability to expand the sanctuary capacity by several hundred. A sloping site shown in this postcard view gave the church yet another usable floor for the expanded programs developed for inner city congregations bent on keeping youth from the evils of pool halls and liquor by offering more healthful alternatives.
