Methodist Episcopal Church, Washington, IA

March 28, 2016

One summer I visited Washington, Iowa with a family from next door. I was about eight or nine. My parents had divorced and the Millers from two houses away took me under their collective wing; their daughter Andrea was my age. Mrs. Miller’s parents had come from Sigourney, Iowa, while his were from Washington nearby. I distinctly recall the Methodist church there, a huge neoclassical affair with several massive columns on its front facade. Even then I was a budding architectural historian.

That church must have been preceded by something more modest. Whatever its exterior appearance, the interior was Akron-Auditorium if this postcard can be believed. A classic D-1.
