St Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Baltimore, MD

July 5, 2016

Main sanctuary of Saint Mark's Lutheran church in Baltimore as seen from balcony. Interior decor by Tiffany Company, 1898.

The sanctuary of St Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore was designed entirely by Louis Comfort Tiffany in a hybrid Early Christian-Byzantine style not often connected with A-A churches. Completed in 1898 from the design of J. E. Sperry (more familiar to me as half of the Wyatt & Sperry partnership), the building give little hint that an Akron component is hidden within the grey sandstone walls. Yet the innocuous exterior reveals a full-blown and somewhat intact Akron Plan Sunday School to the left of the sanctuary.
