Methodist Episcopal Church, Sheldon, IA

July 29, 2016

The largest concentration of Methodists in the U.S. is in the heartland, from Ohio though Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. There were literally hundreds of M.E. church building of the type shown here in Sheldon, IA. Don’t be misled by my use of the denomination’s original name “Methodist Episcopal,” because it had nothing to do with the Protestant Episcopal church other than a shared heritage of governance by bishops — from the Greek ἐπίσκοπος ‎(epískopos, overseer). This other postcard view reveals the characteristic A-B-a-b rhythm of the side elevation.

Sadly, the church seems to be gone.
