Baptist Church, Northampton, MA

August 25, 2016

Akron-Auditorium churches are few and far between in New England. There are two likely reasons for this: #1) The A-A was substantially a Methodist proposition, and that denomination is smaller in numbers than, say, Congregationalists (UCC) or Baptists (of the ABC persuasion). Or #2) Fewer denominations were ready, in what we might call the “building birth cycle,” for a replacement building. So I’m always glad to find them—though this one may not be an actual A-A.

Found this by accident while searching for something else. One on-line source says it is being adaptively reused as a wedding venue, the previous congregation presumably having dissolved or moved on. From the air, it is an amazing amalgam of shapes and a nightmare for flashing.
