First Presbyterian Church, Monmouth, IL

Diagonally across the intersection of Broadway and Second Street from Monmouth’s Methodist church is its Presbyterian congregation. Built circa 1890 as First Presbyterian, Heritage United Presbyterian bears a striking similarity from the air to is sibling across the street. The materials are quite different — grey limestone rather than red brick — but their their footprints are almost interchangeable by a 180° rotation. Which is not to suggest that their interiors are similarly configured but it seems likely. The architect here is not yet known.
