Congregational Church, Forest Grove, OR

It’s rare to find a pair of images for one church being auctioned together. These show the Congregational Church (UCC) in Forest Grove, Oregon, one of several designed by architect Willard F. Tobey [1883-1972]. Many of Tobey’s churches were for Congregationalists and the majority are similar exercises in the “diagonal plan”, with a pair of entries, each offering access to the sanctuary/auditorium at the rear of the building and the semi-circular Sunday School shown prominently at the front. All Tobey’s churches are (or were) located in Oregon communities of all sizes and make him one of the more important and prolific regional practitioners.

Look for his other churches at Portland (also UCC), Lebanon, and Corvallis (both Presbyterian) and their remarkable family resemblance.
