Christian Church, Estherville, IA

November 21, 2016

This unusual church in Estherville, Iowa was designed for the Disciples of Chist. Its simple rectangle could easily have accommodated a diagonal auditorium with adjacent S.S. But we may never know. A fire some years after construction caused the rebuilding of the church (as shown below) and that, too, has subsequently disappeared. So even a telltale window patter is absent.

The windows went from Palladian to Gothic Revival and the entry sprouted two porches. The extent of the fire can be seen in the shift in brick coloration.

The likely architect was James S. Cox.
