Kaumakapili Church, Honolulu, HI

December 8, 2016

Congregational and Methodist missionaries were among the earliest and most numerous to bring Protestant Christianity to the Kingdom of Hawai’i. And with them, eventually, came the A-A phenomenon. They also brought a sexual prudishness and the so-called “missionary position.” But that’s another story. Technically, Kaumakapili Church is Congregationalist or UCC.

These three images are from the website of Mason Architects who have recently restored the 1910-1911 building to its original glory. In the last of these, the movable partition is apparent on the far wall beneath the balcony. The design is credited to architect Harry Livingston Kerr, about whom I know nothing.
