Occasionally, but not very often, A-A churches look surprisingly secular. Indeed, one critic of Louis Sullivan’s UMC church in Cedar Rapids, IA dismissed it as an unsatisfactory design, likening it to a high school auditorium. The irony is that he’s essentially correct — and that is why the building is so remarkably good.

This M.E. church in Carbondale, IL may have been given a less ecclesiastical appearance because the city is also host to Southern Illinois University and this would have also served a student population. I have no idea how the interior was arranged.
