Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC

December 16, 2016

As with many discoveries in this project, Mt Pleasant Baptist Church in Vancouver showed up while I was searching for another building (in a totally different context). Sadly, it was abandoned by its suburbanizing congregation in the 1990s and replaced with an unobtrusive block of apartments.

Founded as Vancouver’s Second Baptist Church in 1891, it became Mount Pleasant by the turn of the century. The date of construction for this, their second building, isn’t yet known but I can say without fear of contradiction that this is a C-1 A-A configuration. Perhaps the successor congregation retained photographs of the interior.

One on-line source credits Toronto architects Burke, Horwood & White with the design in 1909-1910.
