Third Baptist Church, Owensboro, KY

January 3, 2017

Reuben Hunt practiced in Chattanooga and eventually had a branch office in Dallas, from which he exercised a wide influence. He was a proponent of the “saddlebag” type, where the Sunday School rooms are hung on the sides (one, two, three, and in one case all four) of the auditorium. Precisely how this worked functionally, I can’t say. Southerners seemed to like this type a great deal and Third Baptist in Owensboro is a choice example.

Here the radial break-out spaces for the children are (or were) aimed toward the pulpit. Technically this is an A-3 type, though I’m beginning to question my typology as far as “saddlebag” churches are concerned.
