Methodist Episcopal Church, Waverly, IL

January 5, 2017

Churches of this vintage have long since had to address access for their aging congregations. This can be handled in one of two ways: 1) either a long and usually unsightly ramp is placed against the building, or 2) a grade-level entry vestibule brings congregants to an elevator or chair lift. Waverly opted for #2: A new rectangular vestibule obscures the original formality of the front elevation, facing north on State Street at the corner of Grove. Unless something really deviant is going on inside, the Sunday School is probably located in the half-basement.
