Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Paterson, NJ

January 11, 2017

The history of Grace UMC is probably typical for its pattern of growth and movement. Begun modestly as a converted paint shop in the North Ward of Paterson, NJ in 1868. An chapel was added in 1871, but that complex burned in May 1880 and was replaced with a larger building. The Passaic River flood of 1902 nearly destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt and served until 1961, The building was acquired during Urban Renewal and the congregation relocated to Wyckoff. The building shown in this postcard was probably the rebuilding of the flood-damaged structure.

This is a variant of the alternating auditorium (B) and Sunday School (b) elements articulated by entrance towers (A and a); in this case aas an a-B-A-b, if that makes any sense.
