First Evangelical Church, Williamsport, PA

January 20, 2017

A good deal of redundancy occurred when the Methodist Episcopal denomination mergted with the Evangelical United Brethren. Larger cities with one of each often had to choose which would become the home of the new United Methodist Church. That was not the situation in Williamsport, PA, because the  exemplary Pine Street M.E. building — probably by Brown Burton & Davis — has a modern replacement and the former Evangelical church is now First UMC.

First Evangelical was built during 1923-1924, which is exceptionally late for an A-A plan. Yet there it is, evidenced by some very small, very blurred photographs:

The auditorium is situated in the narrow portion of the wedge, while the Sunday School is at the broad (far) end, out of sight in the postcard view.
