Willis Avenue M.E. Church, Bronx, NY

January 27, 2017

The former Willis Avenue M. E. Church at 300 Willis Avenue is a 1900 design by George W. Kramer. This isn’t his largest commission but its size pushes it into the category of Institutional Church, which means that its program would have much more complex than other churches. I’ll bet there are (or were) services like a gymnasium, daycare, perhaps even a library. Which do you suppose is stacked on the other: auditorium or Sunday School?

Sadly, the church closed in September 2016 and current google.maps images show the windows removed and a lot of scaffolding. It doesn’t look good.
