Congregational Church, Olivet, MI

March 19, 2017

The sepia tones of this early photograph calm down an otherwise colorful masonry exterior of Richardsonian ashlar. Located at 125 College Street in Olivet, Michigan, I had originally mistaken this for another Richardsonian church in the vicinity.

The land slopes down dramatically toward the rear, where google maps shows a two-story Sunday school wing. Interior views on the church website, however, assiduously avoid showing the rear or sides of the auditorium and thus leaving this in limbo regarding its A-A status. Architects in 1895 were Starbuck & Rose of Milwaukee, WI, whose normal “market area” would hardly have stretched as far as central Michigan. Its stained glass is also noteworthy.
