Sands Street Memorial M. E. Church, Brooklyn, NY

March 26, 2017

The discovery du jour is the “Brooklyn Eagle Postal Card Series” of significant sites (and people) in what people still must of thought of as an independent municipality. Among the 400-plus cards, there are a large number of churches, at least a few of which may prove to have been Akron-Auditorium. Sands Street Memorial M.E. church — inexplicably at the corner of Henry and Clark streets — is an outrageous agglomeration of ornamented forms. What may be (have been) its Sunday school is likely the wing extending off camera at the far right. If a Sanborn Fire Insurance map for that location can be found, the shapes and orientation of those major interior volumes are probably identified. John Welch was the architect.

Another view of the church appears in the American Architect & Building News for 18 February 1893, where it is identified as First M.E.
