Baptist Church, Altoona, PA

April 2, 2017

From the air, this part of Altoona has a very strange pattern of streets and implied property lines (party walls between buildings): one “grid” is skewed from the other. What gives?

First Baptist church is located at the corner of Seventeenth Street and Twelfth Avenue. Compared to churches in my part of the forest, this example of the Neo-Classical would qualify for Christian Science occupancy. See what I mean?

Be that as it may, this is a handsome example, which from a google side view has a substantial Sunday school wing only hinted by a single pedimented door.

Not incidentally, four blocks in on Twelfth Avenue, Altoona’s First UMC still stands, an exemplary A-A church that has unfortunately lost its lantern. The Baptist dome appears to be in much better condition.

  1. The Organ Historical Society has a listing for this church having a new, substantial, M.P. Moller pipe organ installed here in 1915. which gives a “no later than” date for the building’s construction.
