Methodist Episcopal Church, Newport, TN

April 8, 2017

Similarities between the Methodist church in Newport, Tennessee and another roughly contemporary building in Johnson City allow its attribution to Chattanooga architects Bearden & Foreman.

Munsey Memorial UMC was built as State Street M.E. and dates from 1907-1908 (demolished in the late 40s) but the Newport church has been difficult to pin down. I’ve not been able to locate interior views of either.

Bearden & Foreman, by the way, were associate architects with McKim Mead & White on Chattanooga’s First Baptist church. So they must have been, as Southerners say, “…of good family.”
