Baptist Church, Mason City, IA

I suppose this building is here for reasons other than its potential as an example of the A-A. Yes, there is an auxiliary space on the left side of the auditorium but it is unlikely a full-blown Akron plan Sunday school.

First Baptist church in Mason City, Iowa was a project of 1895-1896 [not a great economy for projects of this size] by Minneapolis architects Orff & Joralemon. O&J are perhaps better known for their connection with Leroy Buffington, Harvey Ellis, and the Twin City architectural milieu of the 1890s. I presented a paper on that topic many years ago at an academic conference.

The front elevation, unfortunately in shadow here, is a masterful composition of intersecting curves and grid. And the credit for the talent behind it is credited to Edgar Joralemon, Harvey Ellis, or Albert Levering, depending on your loyalties.
