The White Temple, Miami, FL

April 10, 2017

Miami’s First Methodist Church, a.k.a. the White Temple, was dedicated on 18 January 1914. Complete cost was $72,000 ($1.750M in today’s dollars) which seems extreme for an auditorium seating 620 and overflow in the adjacent Sunday school for 400. The entire complex — and I do mean complex — was demolished in the 70s for a college campus. The material was white concrete, which was fairly progressive for such a prominent building in the early 20th century. The style is described as Spanish Renaissance.

  1. Photos and additional details regarding this building’s demise are given here. The story is tragi/comic, but completely plausible.
