Project for an M.E. Church, Kansas City, MO

April 25, 2017

The timeline of the various partnerships among Messrs. Crapsey, Lamm, Brown, Burton and Davis may never been unraveled. It seems that one or more of them are responsible for a dozen or more church buildings in Greater Cincinnati. But one of the less usual discoveries is this unbuilt design for a Methodist church in Kansas City, Missouri. The image was found on a Cincinnati-related website, an odd inclusion since it was clearly understood to be a design for another city. Cursory investigation into the Kansas City connection has yielded nothing; even the projected site at 63rd Street and Swope Parkway is occupied by a different large institution. Perhaps the construction was delayed due to fundraising issues or it was interrupted by WWI and found to be unnecessary in the immediate post-war years. Whatever the reason, it’s a handsome example of the Brown & Davis office.
