Memorial Church of the Holy Cross, Reading, PA

Thomas P. Lonsdale was architect for the Memorial Church of the Holy Cross, which is actually Methodist. A massive mid-block Richardsonian pile, it has a diagonal auditorium and detached Akron Plan school, though I believe they’re disconnected. This “split-screen” postcard appears at auction very often.

Who, do you suppose, decided to put an enormous fireplace in the living room of God’s House?

Most churches experience growing pains. Like many inner-city congregations, Holy Cross is experiencing the opposite, with shrinking congregations and revenues. Though it shouldn’t, this building always reminds me of the chapel at Stanford University:
