First Christian Church, Watsonville, CA

This is the third of Watsonville’s four Christian churches, all design by church member William H. Weeks. Weeks had apprenticed with San Francisco architect Robert Orr during 1897-1898 and was sent to guide Orr’s office in Watsonville, which is how he came to be associated with this project. This design shared several Spanish Colonial details with one of Orr’s works, the Christian church in Winters, California; it’s possible that Weeks may have worked on that project, or at least been familiar with it. For additional comparison, here is Orr’s design for the Methodist church in Upland, California—showing perhaps a little more control over several disparate elements:
