Swedish Free Church, Kingsburg, CA

May 28, 2017

Kingsburg is a small community in the Central Valley of California, the state’s agricultural bread basket; it is located fewer than twenty miles southeast of Fresno. Established as a flag stop on the Central Pacific railroad, the area was settled by Swedish immigrants, hence the name of this church. Culturally it seems to have much more to do with the state’s Spanish heritage, rather than anything overtly Scandinavian. In addition, the prospect of an Akron Sunday school on the far left is also unusual for Lutheran churches in the Reformed tradition.

Now known as Concordia Lutheran church, the building shown in this postcard was dedicated in 1918.
