Two in McAlester, OK

June 6, 2017

Though I lived in Oklahoma for seven years, I frankly can’t recall being in McAlester, in the southeast quadrant of the state.

At the intersection of Carl Albert Parkway (named for a long-time political figure) and Third Street there are two churches on diagonally opposite corners: First Methodist, on the northwest (now repurposed as the Grand Events Center) and First Christian at the southeast (recently closed and vacant). Though the massing of these two buildings could be A-A in character, interior photographs haven’t confirmed that suspicion.

An on-line survey for prospective historic district designation includes minimal information on each building, giving their respective construction dates as 1922 and 1925, both of which seem late.
